Porirua is a city with a distinct character of its own, attracting a range of industries and people.
Prominent on the hillside just north of Porirua city are the Police and Traffic Training Colleges. The city is named for nearby Porirua Harbour, 'Parirua' being the name bestowed by the legendary voyager Kupe, and meaning 'the place of two flowings of the tide'. The harbour has two arms.
Porirua has many interesting places to visit including 'Titahi Bay' One of the best of the Wellington beaches, 'Plimmerton Beach' a well-sheltered strip of sand where Te Rauparaha was taken prisoner at dawn. |
